Prying caps off switches on keyboard

Prying caps off switches on keyboard

2004-01-02 by Jerry

Hi All,

At it again <GG> My first order of 2004 is to repalce the lights that ahve burnt out on
the music keyboard.

How do you pry the white plastic caps off without damaging something? I noticed
there's a TINY lip on the cap so I thought perhaps a piece of dental floss might do the
trick. Didn't work. I'm thinking pliers now though common sense is telling me this is
not a good idea!

Any tricks to prying them off without ruining them?

And once I get them off, I assume to repalce tehm you just push them back down in
the hole?

Thanks in advance!

Jerry

Thank you Frank and Rob. I siad pliers sort of tongue in cheek....I'd never do that but
wasn't sure if you could do it from the outside or if you did need to go into the
keyboard itself to do this.

No, I've never opened up the music keyboard...only the alpha keyboard and the
mainframe. This is vergin terriory to me but I'm not bothered by it. I'll set aside the
afternoon tomorrow and tackle it.

No, I've not got replacement bulbs for it yet. I thoght once I removed the ones that
have burnt out, I could go to my local Radio Shack elecronics store and see if they've
got them.

I'm assuming so long as the right connector is on the replacement, any 5.5, .24volt,
50ma bulb is ok? If not, an someone recommend a place in teh USa where I can get
them. It'd be cheaper than ordering from the UK since they are not an expensive item.

Happy New Year!

Hi Jerry,

I ordered mine from the UK (I'm also in the US) because I couldn't
find them anywhere in North America. You might have some luck with
mouser.com (I couldn't find the right ones, but I didn't perform an
exhaustive search) if you didn't want to order from overseas. It
appears the bulbs were primarily used in telephones that weren't US
models.

Changing them should be pretty easy, at least. You need to "pull"
out the old ones - they're tricky to get at but you can gently use
pliers, or put a cylinder of electrical tape around the bulb, or
push the outer insulation of a patch cable onto the bulb and then
pull.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the note. I'll check out mouser.com but I guess from the sound of it, I'll
probalby end up having to order them from the UK. I just didn't want to spend a lot on
shipping and all since they are so cheap an item.

Will have a look to see about getting the bulbs out. Maybe the tape sounds like the
way to go for me.
