The $3 was based on the what one of my family members who worked at a national retail computer chain could buy the cable for "at cost". I'm sure the store's "cost" included advertising, shipping, overhead,etc. The USB spec calls for a cable of a maximum length of about 2 meters, so any longer kluged telephone cables will have probelms.
