As Markus said, for PTH PCBs the holes must be pre-drilled. I was always too scared to etch dimples and rely on the carbide drill bit wondering into the centre and breaking off. I print a drill guide sheet printed on glossy photo inkjet paper and tape it to the PCB material. The guide also identifies each hole size too.
