I've just designed something similar using the new PIC18F24J10, but my board 
is all SMT, with just 7 wire links:

I've made a PCB (photo etch) and will be testing it later.

The next one I make will use the 44-lead QFP 18F45J10. I'll add some 
additional pads to that for SO-23 transistors etc.
