Toner Tansfer PCB photos

2008-09-14 by John Honniball

I recently made my first Toner Transfer PCB, and I have some photos on
Flickr, here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachrocomputer/sets/72157607180910289/

It's an Atmel AVR board, inspired by the Evil Mad Scientist Labs business
card board:

http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/card

I did the PCB design using GNU-PCB and printed the result on
junk-mail paper using an old HP LaserJet 4+ that I got from
FreeCycle. Etched with Ferric Chloride and then drilled as
usual.

Now I have some plans afoot to make an ATmega32 board, and an
LED shift-register board.

Wow, didn't your eyes cross drilling all those holes?

At first i thought you etched it on some kind of pre-drilled stripboard...

I've just designed something similar using the new PIC18F24J10, but my board
is all SMT, with just 7 wire links:

http://www.leonheller.com/Designs/PIC18F24J10_Proto.gif

I've made a PCB (photo etch) and will be testing it later.

The next one I make will use the 44-lead QFP 18F45J10. I'll add some
additional pads to that for SO-23 transistors etc.

What functions do the wire links near C5 and R1 serve? Couldn't you just
connect those directly?

I like to have the connections around regulators fairly short, for
stability. It probably doesn't matter, though.

Er, yes, it was a bit tedious!

After a while, it did seem like I was etching my own Veroboard!

The next design will have fewer holes, promise. And I'll use
fibreglass board, too.

Me too, but if you pull the ground wire corner down right below C5 that one
link is freed up and the trace is the same length.
R1 could be connected directly to conn1, i would say.

Possibly it's just me, hating to solder unnecessary wire links or 0R
resistors.

I think they punch veroboard, at least the cheap paper kind.

They aren't etched, either. I think they "plough" out the copper with a
tool, like a shaper with metal.

Thanks, I didn't notice that.

I had the DC connector the wrong way round, anyway. Correcting it on the
layout removed that link, of course. The regulator was a dead short when I
first tested it and was taking over 1A. Those little TO-92 devices are very
robust, and it still worked when I turned the connector round.

The board works; I've just tried a test program on it

Well, the ones i use (if i can't avoid it) have round pads, not strips, so i
think they are etched.

I was thinking of the original Veroboard.
