PCB Software?

PCB Software?

2005-11-17 by Jim Miller

I'm getting ready to download Eagle. I've used the ExpressPCB software but never had a board built by them...project died. I understand there are some workarounds to use their layout somehow but I'd rather keep it straightforward.

Are there free alternatives to Eagle that anyone can recommend I try?

This is so I can get started on my PCB experiments.

tnx
jim

Jim,
I've tried Eagle and its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I am no
expert, but it was the first one I tried so I guess if I can do it anyone
can. I can't advise you how good these are but here are some free apps on
this page:

I use DipTrace, the free version. There is some limitation, but for my
needs is OK. Take a look at
http://www.diptrace.com/download.php

Eagle is excellent for free, hard to imagine much of anything
surpassing it. There's a reason so many people use it..

Start with the tutorial and go through it, it'll take a week or two to
get used to its different ideas but it's well worth it. There are
plenty of others that are quite decent as well, but there's also a
reason so many people end up using Eagle.

For simple stuff, I like TinyCAD. Currently my use of Eagle is
sporadic enough that I have to keep relearning it. TinyCAD I can pick
up and use.

http://tinycad.sourceforge.net/ (source code is available)

There is also a free PCB layout program that works with TinyCAD called FreePCB.
