I'm just getting back into construction after many years.
Don't have any junk boxes. No now time to accumulate them.
Plans for constructing SMD boards.
Does anyone have suggestions of where to get assortments of caps and
resistors? How about where to order IC/s?

Hello Ned,

I've had good service from either DigiKey or Mouser. Both have an
extensive catalogue of the parts you are asking info. on. Usually, I
can order Monday and have the parts in hand by Friday using
economical ground transportation (UPS or FedEx). DigiKey has a $25
min. order otherwise they charge $5 handling charge. I have no
problem meeting the limit :-)

Good luck with your projects.

Don't forget Jameco! Another supplier which I have used quite a bit is
Unicorn Electronics.

Depends where you are. I mostly use Farnell, RS and Rapid Electronics, here
in the UK.

B.G. Micro in Texas is another fine source of ICs.
They are a small friendly outfit, and they stock a lot of
items, and they are often less expensive than Jameco.

And don't forget CPC - part of the Farnell group.

A year or so I bought from them a resistor kit - 100 off each, all E24
values, 1% 0.25W MF from 10R to 1M for what I thought was a "silly" price
- around £50 IIRC - and that's a lot of resistors.

I see from my latest catalogue they are rather more now - £168.16 +VAT.

They still stock a lot of spares for things like washing machines,
microwave ovens etc alomg with things like laser assemblies for CD/DVD
players and drive belts for cassette recorders.

Collect old hard drives, old PC cards, dead motherboards. You should
find some parts. However, the older the larger, and good luck on
getting an assortment of good values. Still, those things might be
cheap.

Also do not forget ebay. Many parts come up at reasonable prices. Some
of the modern cmos ic's have amazing capabilities. Also test equipment
auctions provide some amazing values.
