HP Laserjet 4P darker printout

HP Laserjet 4P darker printout

2008-01-25 by P

Hello all,

I have a question : I recently bought a secondhand Laserjet 4P to make
my own artwork.
Besides the fact that the printer doesn't print that black (with a new
tonerkit) it also prints irregular traces (small bits missing).
On my former job we also used a laserjet 4P. Printing always went great
on heavy tracing paper).

I have tried several types of transparants. (overhead and tracing
paper) but I can't get any good results no mather what I do in the
driver menu or printermenu.

Is it possible that I have to clean the printer? Or is there a
possibility (potentiometer or simular) on the printer to increase the
amount of toner?

Thanks in advance for your time,

Pieter

Check all the replaceable bits and pieces and see if they're clean. On
most HP printers, the drum and toner are one unit, so you should have
gotten a good one. However, if there's a regular pattern to the
missing pieces, you either have a bad fuser (the pattern will rub
off), or the drum might be bad. A call to HP support if possible
might help that.

If you are getting good results on paper, then one problem is that
the toner density might be too low. Not sure how to set this on a 4P,
I do know how to do it on a 2200D.

maybe a utility that HP has installed in the programs folder under HP
in windows.

Perhaps the printer is faulty, I used to get quite good results with a 4P.
Ink jets are *much* better, if the correct medium is used.

Thanks for your replies.

I didn't find any settings in the driver to increase the toner amount.
All the settings on the printermenu and driver are set to the
most 'darkest' setting.
I know some printers have a hardware (trimpot or switch or something)
to increase the amount of toner...

Is there a possibility it can be done on the pcb in the printer?

Download the manual and see if such a pot exists.
The IIID had one (green), and i believe at least one newer model still had it.
Later they decided users are just to dumb to find and adjust that pot,
and built it into software instead.

Re: HP Laserjet 4P darker printout

I was already afraid that a hardware solution would be missing.....
Is someone here using a Laserjet 4 to do his artwork? I'm using
a 'white label' toner so I have ordered an original one from HP.
Maybe that will do the trick.

I tried putting two sheets on eachother but that didn't work out fine
either...... I have a professional vacuum exposure unit.
I have had good results with tracing paper. I don't understand what
happened / happens....

Try a clean up inside the Laser Scanner Assy. pay attention to the mirror.
