Printer Preferences

My Okidata B4200 laster priner died 3 or 4 months ago and I want to
replace it. I didn't use it for printing schematics so it was a
natural death 8>). I was wondering what laser printers the members of
this group used and what method of transfers they used (magazine,
photo paper, etc) I am leaning towards a HP1006 since the drum and
toner are tied together even though the toner is more expensive,
replacing a $150 drum is a thing of the past. I was wondering if
anyone else is using this printer. I also read that someone else
liked the Okidata printer and I can find a used one for the same price
as the HP. Please give me some guidance as to your preferences.

Thanks
CJ

I've got a $99 HP P1006 (from Staples) that I'm quite happy with.
Nice dense prints.

I've also got a Brother HL-2140 that I'm not so impressed with. Lots
of dropout, not very dense prints.

This is from a perspective of someone who uses the laser printer to do
toner resists for PCBs, so density and coverage are important. That's
really my only criteria for good vs. bad.

Hi CJ,

I've been using a cheap Samsung ML-2010 ($60) for a couple of years now. It
works well with Staples photo paper. There are newer models now.

If you don't abuse the drum too much, it is easily refilled with 3rd party
toner. I think I paid $5 for a toner refill.

Watch out for deals with an "intorductory" print cartridge. Back
around Christmas time I bought an HP1022 (1200 dpi) with a full toner
cartridge that would print 2000+ sheets. There were much "cheaper" 600
dpi models on the HP WEB page at the time, but they came with 500
sheet toner cartridges. By the time I have printed a couple of reams
of paper the "cheaper" printers would cost the same. I use the printer
for both general printing and toner transfer. The 1022 does great
toner transfer using the Hammermill 16302-0 Business Glossy Paper that
has been discussed several times on this group. I have found that I
have to be careful about "overcooking" tha paper and ending up with
something that is next to impossible to dissolve. YMMV.
BTW - Direct from HP turned out to be cheaper than other WEB dealers.
With free shipping mine showed up three days after the order was
placed.
