Far circuits sells carbide tipped PCB drills with large (1/8?) shanks, but they're way too expensive from them. I'm looking for cheap ones, but not unusably cheap Chinese ones. Something like Enco house brand quality (no, I didn't check Enco). What do people who do this a lot buy? Alan

Re-sharpened bits are usually a good deal. As long as you are doing manual drilling, the length doesn't matter too much (until the drill's too short.) Ebay sources are usually pretty inexpensive. I don't know as I'd say I do this a lot, but I usually buy resharpened bits from Electronic Goldmine for $1 each. Lately, though, the smallest the have is .041. Kerry ab1jx wrote:

I bought a bunch of resharpened bits for less than $0.10 each a few years ago (boxes of 50). They were labeled Magatool Chip Saver and have worked well. The going rate now seems to be $0.50 each for resharpened on eBay. But, it might be worth watching for a real auction. That's how I got mine. I guess no one thought they could use 1000 of them. Various sizes are available. Mine were all #66 (0.033"). John

Harbor Freight has an assortment, resharpened, of about 20 for roughly six dollars. That's both on line and in the stores if they still carry it. Now if you go online to HF, they (at one time) had a larger assortment for only a few dollars more. Bear in mind that you will be getting a good number of unusable drills (because of size) if you try this approach. On the other hand, you may find this useful. the 1/8 inch size is an industry standard. I'd recommend something other than a dremel, since the runout on a dremel is worse than that on a Proxxon. The 12 volt version of a proxxon will work, but I like the 120 volt better. Harvey > > Alan

I just got some from <drillbitsunlimited.com>. The have all kinds of do-it-yourself assortments and also have router bits. They came nicely packaged in great little storage cases. I usually buy ones with collars so I don't have to guess the sizes. Prices were excellent, too! Mark At 10:12 AM 11/23/2012, you wrote:

I buy mine from ESR (reground tungsten carbide reduced shank): http://www.esr.co.uk/electronics/products/frame_pcb.htm Leon -- Leon Heller G1HSM

ESR has some interesting stuff, but I'm in the US so drillcity looks like the way to go. I didn't realize that PC board fabrication is a whole sub-industry unto itself until I started looking around. I used to wire point to point on Vectorboard with wire wrap wire a lot but I don't see as well as I used to so I'm trying to switch over, get comfortable with making PCBs for everything instead. After finding no decent source for these in my country I bought some from here: http://stores.ebay.com/CARBIDE-PLUS and am very happy. --- In Homebrew_PCBs@yahoogroups.com, "ab1jx" <alancorey@...> wrote:

I second that. I've always bought from drill bit city. Hard to beat the price for new bits (eg new 0.8mm, pack of 5, $8.15). I always get packs of 5 or 10 as I seem to break them regularly while handling them. --- In Homebrew_PCBs@yahoogroups.com, Jan Kok <jan.kok.5y@...> wrote:
