Any new developments with Direct Laser Printing (DLP)?

Any new developments with Direct Laser Printing (DLP)?

2014-04-20 by Rob Frohne

Greetings,

I'm wondering if anyone has done any more work on direct laser
printing. I would like to improve our process, because sometimes,
especially on bigger boards, the print is spotty (the toner doesn't
stick everywhere it should) on the board.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,
Do you mean Direct Laser Printing on a copper plate (conductive) like a PCB?
I though the laser printing needed an insulator to deposit toner on.
I might be wrong though.

The thing that seems to work best is disconnecting the transfer
voltage from the transfer roller and then grounding the surface of
the pcb. This can be done with a thin wire or conductive copper tape
(make sure it has conductive adhesive) from the pcb to the carrier,
then a thin wire from the carrier to ground.

Have you tried that?

Mark

Rob,
The last real development I have seen was by Volkan a few years back. It's on my list of projects but currently no time to work on it. The project has gotten less important since the availability of commercial PCB's from China have become so available and cost effective. It's had to justify the cost of materials, time and effort any more.

Raster scanning with a UV laser is the way to go for imaging a sensitized board. It does take some time to do the raster so if your are making more than one or two boards a photo tool would be better suited for the job. The companion project would be a drum type laser photo plotter to make the photo tools, also on my list.

Have to check my notes, but I think acetone works well, but isopropyl alcohol does not.

Hi Mark,
Very interesting!!! I 'll try that too. Gnd the pcb etc.
Also wipe down the PCB with acetone and let
dry( ~ a minute or less ) prior to running it in the printer.

Hi Mark,
I found the Alcohol dries leaving more water vapor( maybe from cooling more during evaporation or it's water content?).

The Acetone removes the oils/fats and is more dry afterward.

It's great for viral disinfectant too :-) Removes the attachment protuberances for spreading
thus letting the immune system more time to kill it. IMO

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
