chip soldering service

chip soldering service

2014-07-04 by joeprice@...

After receiving the AD9866 64LFCSP chip and reading about methods of soldering I'm not sure that
without additional equipment such as a reflow oven I'll be able to solder it. I have a Hakko
850 SMT hot air station but I don't think this will be sufficient.
Before starting a the toaster oven conversion does anyone have a link for somebody

in the States that can provide this service?

Thanks Joe

Joe,
If you have the Hakko 850B, the only thing you need is a square nozzle.
But you do not need the exact shape, one that is close (just a bit bigger) should work OK.
you put solder paste on the pads, place the part carefully, and then reflow.

I use an embossing gun ($14 at Hobby Lobby) to reflow most of my parts up to 100 QFP without trouble.
above 100, it is a bit tricky but feasible.

The tough part with that package is getting the large pad on the bottom soldered to the board. If the PCB has a lot of plated-through holes under the chip, that can help, at least with inspection after the fact to make sure that large pad soldered. Do you have a board preheater?

Ugh. Yahoo really horks up the links, now. Let me try a link to just the picture of it:

Even an electric fry pan can be used for surface mount soldering. It helps, reportedly, if you have a glass lid to put on it.

For hand soldering I use a single large via in the pad with a large
soldering iron tip.

All,

I don't have the boad yet. As this is a 4 layer board I'm not sure if has Via or not. The reason for post is that the
AD9866 is expensive to ruin and the board may be a one of.
I only have a cup warmer that was used in the past I'm not sure it can be used or not.
I will try to find a square nozzle for the Hakko. Whats a good solder paste to use?

Tnx Joe wa9cgz
