All digital audio systems benefit from having the software and the OS 
on one drive, and then writing the audio files to a different drive. An 
external Firewire drive is fine for this. LaCie external firewire 
drives are very inexpensive, they start at under $100. You get better 
performance with a 7200 RPM drive, preferably one that has an onboard 
8MB cache.
