No, this is a selectable feature ("use object name as filename" or something)
and IIRC it was introduced in Logic 6.
It's a convenient function when you name your tracks (not when you leave them
"audio 1"). :o)
It is true that you HAVE to enter a filename when selecting the record path,
this is because the standard fileselector is used and it doesn't want to
leave without having an actual filename. As long as you enter one letter, it
is happy.
And if you want to manually enter filenames, deselect the "use object name"
function, it's a checkbox in the audio record path dialog.
