I went through the same bullshit with my Sonic Maximizer, except I
relented and paid another $100 for the new one so I wouldn't have to
maintain an OS 9 disk. I made numerous calls, and no one at BBE seemed
to have a clue about this plugin. Maybe it was all an act so they
could get out of offering an upgrade path. Their attitude was
completely unprofessional and it killed me to be giving them my money.
I wish Virsonix had just kept the thing and made it their own. End
Rant.

As for exciters, they don't address the main effect of the Sonic
Maximizer - differentially adjusting the phase relationships and
envelopes of high, middle and low ranges of the spectrum. Just adding
high frequency content is not even in the same ballpark. So I think
we're stuck dealing with BBE on this product until someone comes along
with a similar process.

I'm still going to do a comparison though. Maybe the high freq
enhancement is a bigger part of the effect than I think.
