Why to the desktop?
You want to create new preferences for your new installation. But you will later import the key commands from one of the files from the old preferences folder. I guess that woiuld be the last step after all the others. If you are doing a totally clean installation, then you will get the default key commands. So you need some way to get your old ones. You may also consider creating a new autoload file, since some people have corrupted screensets.
Regarding the copy wizzard, do you have to connect both computers, perhaps in firewire target disk mode in order for the wizzard to see the old installation?
