I believe Apple's policy is that all academic purchases are not upgradable. For example, you can buy Logic 7 for $500 academic or the full version for $1000, but can't upgrade the academic version. So when 8 comes out, you'll pay another $500 for another academic version versus $300 for an upgrade. But when logic 9 comes out almost break even.
Apple is always secretive about releasing everything. The beta-testers might have some idea, but they would get fired for saying anything. so you take your chances.
