I once made the mistake of yanking the firewire cable on an external drive when it seemed to be hung up and not responding to anything else. After that the drive would not appear on the desktop as if damaged. However, I ran Diskwarrior on it, and it brought it back to life. Evidently some directory was corrupted, which was easily fixed. I have read that experts advise you don't even power down the mac with external drives - but rather drag the drives to the trash first (to eject them) before powering down the machine. The next thing to try is plugging it in to different firewire ports. I just bought a board with extra firewire and USB ports, and found the USB to be dead by plugging a drive into different jacks.
