No upgrades for academic products is sorta standard. Adobe CS (photoshop, 
etc.) is the same way. Its probably better to just go non-academic. There may be 
less support too - although you don't get a huge amount of support even when 
paying $1000.


Normal purchase :
full purchase            $1000 (or $500 on ebay)
1st upgrade $300   ... total $1300
2nd upgrade $300   ... total $1600
3rd upgrade $300   ... total $1900 ($1400 if original bought on ebay)


Academic
full purchase            $500
1st upgrade $500 ... total $1000
2nd upgrade $500   ... total $1500
3rd upgrade $500   ... total $2000
