You didn't really import the audio at all.  You just added a  
reference to it to your song.  If you add from a CD, then check the  
path in the audio window (make sure "Show File Info" in the View menu  
is checked), it should show the name of the CD.  You shouldn't be  
able to do any destructive editing to it until it is copied to a  
writeable media.  You can do that prior to Logic, in say, iTunes, or  
save from Logic, as you mention.

This behavior is different in L8, however.  When adding a file from  
CD, L8 puts a copy of the audio file in the global or song-specific  
record path specified in the audio preferences panel.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
