When I held the shift key down, it started right up--of course,  
without the drivers.  But even after repairing permissions, when I  
restarted it, it doesn't come up and won't start.

Now, here, I feel a little stupid:  what is  the "sudo periodic daily"  
etc on the terminal?" that you referred to?
