Logic Crashing....

Logic Crashing....

2008-07-04 by Tim McLane

I have Logic 8.0.2 which is crashing on start up (it should open on
startup), sometimes with the error -1712. Tonight I reinstalled Logic
(just the application) but to no effect. If it were a PC, I would
think that a firewall was prevent things from starting up because
sometimes Appleworks doesn't open either. After I try opening up
Logic, the icon in the dock shows a little white dot next to it,
indicating that it is open, but of course, it's not. Restarting the
Mac doesn't do anything, either.

I have a Mac Mini (leopard), a Firestudio audio interface and an
external hard drive of 500G, of which I have used all but about 85G.

Any ideas?

Try restarting the FireStudio, or starting up Logic with it off to eliminate that as the
problem. I've had similar issues occasionally and it's always turned out to be the my
FireStudio. I'm using the beta drivers and it seems to have an issue when the computer
goes to sleep and getting the latency/buffer-size settings correct. At lest when I get it
working it works wonderful! I used it to record nearly 13 hours of continuous audio this
weekend at 96k and I didn't have any issues at all.

simplistic, but did you repair permisions and do the "sudo periodic daily"
etc on the terminal? You can also try restarting holding the shift key down and
see if Logic will start without any drivers. Then restart.

When I held the shift key down, it started right up--of course,
without the drivers. But even after repairing permissions, when I
restarted it, it doesn't come up and won't start.

Now, here, I feel a little stupid: what is the "sudo periodic daily"
etc on the terminal?" that you referred to?

I didn't mention that other things are crashing on my computer as
well: Apple Works and even my disc utility crashed---that's probably
significant, I would imagine.
I did repair permissions. I'll probably take it to Apple Care today.

OOPS! It looks like a serious crash on the way.

I hope you did enable time machine and you made a complete backup of
your files. I have been in that situation before, and the best way to
get rid of all kinds of issues is to make a clean install of 10.5 with
your original disc. Then, use the migration assistant, that imports
your time machine data. It should do the job.

OR: you're using the firestudio alongside with an external FW drive
and you're starting up on that drive, too. Many FW audio interfaces
don't like that. I used to have the exact same problem in the past
with 2 different FW interfaces on 4 computers (G5, PB17, PB15, Macbook
13"). By all means, avoid daisy-chaining hard drives and audio
intefaces, although multiple connections allow that in theory.

Open the Terminal utility, then type "sudo periodic daily" and your password.
then "sudo periodic weekly", then eventually (10 minutes later when it
finishes), "sudo periodic monthly". These are the routine adjustments that the Mac
OS is supposed to make at 3 am if you leave your computer on all the time.

It seems like you have some serious problems. The only other things I can
think of :
- try running disk warrior and/or micromat techtool on your disks
- try removing some ram in case you have bad ram

You might need to backup everything to an external (or 2nd interior) drive
and then wipe the disk and do a clean install. Before you do that, you can do
this trick which an apple "genius" told me - is create a new user as a fresh
start and re-install Logic for that new user.

thanks for the tips....I just did a clean sweep of everything -- I'm
not sure that will solve everything. Now Safari is crashing, ical is
crashing ---who knows?

It still doesn't make sense: when I used FW to connect to external HD,
it was a big problem; now that I have it connected by USB, still
things are crashing --- I just don't know where to go with this.

Any more ideas?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
