Using a RY30 drum machine as a (drum sample) controller in Logic

Using a RY30 drum machine as a (drum sample) controller in Logic

2008-07-02 by dancensoul

I have an old Yamaha RY30 drum machine that I would like to use as a
controller (to play EXS24, Ultrabeat, etc) drums in Logic 8, similar to
how one would use an MPC or an Akao MPD to to that...can anyone explain
how to do this. Will I be able to use my DX7S as my keyboard controller
(I use it currently as my master controller, but don't like composing
drum tracks on keyboard keys).

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

thanks!

Greg...

It has MIDI...not USB. What I mean is...do i hook up the MIDI out to the MIDI in of my USB MIDI interface which goes to Logic? Do I have to set up anything special in Logic such that it sees the RY30? Is there something basic I set up in the RY30 (via sending MIDI) to the EXS24 sampler (do I some how have to match MIDI notes from the RY30 to match those of each voice in an EXS24 drum kit)? I only have 12 pads on the RY30 so I wont be able to access all the drums in an EXS24 or Ultrabeat kit... Follow me...or am I making this too complicated?

You need to set up AMS (Audio Midi Setup Utility) so that it sees
your MIDI interface and your RY30.

One you do that the RY30 will be available as an input or out put
device in Logic MIDI tracks...

If it has midi out, then yes, it can be used as a trigger. Hook its midi out
to a midi in of your interface. In the old days you used to have to go to
Logic's environment and create a new midi instrument or multi-instrument, and
set it to the correct port. I am not sure if that can be done in Apples
audio/midi utility instead now. when you hit a key on it, look in the transport of
logic to see if the midi note shows up. make a midi track on the arrange page,
and load the exs with sounds. then select that track and hit the ry30 and see if
it makes some sound.
