Transpose Whole Song?

Transpose Whole Song?

2008-07-08 by Gregory Anderson

I'm trying to work with the global chord and transposition tracks,
which is a new and frustrating paradigm shift for me. I finally put
together a whole song in Gm, with all my midi tracks set to No
Transpose, and all the chords entered correctly in the Chord track,
and copied onto my "lead sheet" midi region.

I now want to move the whole song down one semi-tone to F#m. Before
the days of a global chord track, I could just transpose the midi
track where I had entered the chords, and all was good. But now when
I transpose the right midi track, the notes transpose but the chords
stay the same. The manual says that you can select multiple chord or
transposition events for dragging, but I can only do that by shift-
clicking on every single chord in the song. Is there a global
transpose feature somewhere in this program?

Thanks,

Gregory

I had high hopes for that chord track, but now I stay clear of it. So I'm
sorry I can't answer your question directly.

I prefer old skool transpose by selecting all regions, de-selecting any drum
tracks, then opening the matrix window and zooming way out, click on a region
with no notes to show all notes. Then select all and nudge up or down using
keycommands (or the mouse).

Yeah, using the chord and transposition tracks has definitely been a
struggle. The only reason I use them is when I need to use apple
loops for some reason (usually to add guitar to my compositions).
But the effects on existing and new midi regions seem almost random.
They transpose when I don't want it (and vice versa), using one
transpose drop-down in the inspector transposes the notation but not
the notes, and normalizing parameters seems to have no effect. If
you forget to check the "No Transpose" button, good luck getting the
part back to the original notes.

I'm sure it will get better as it becomes more familiar to me, but
like you, I had a vision in my head of how a chord track could make
my life a whole lot easier, and so far, that just has not happened.

A slight variation on this is to select all, press "E" to go to the
event list and move any one of the notes up or down the number of half
steps to achieve your desired transposition. It's a little more
accurate than doing the same things from the arrange window.

Tim,

How so? I've always done it from the arrange window and never had any
inaccuracy whatsoever.

I just feel more accurate from the other window because I can "inch
up", unit by unit (half steps) to the desired goal key. In the
arrange window, there is the danger of moving other things or moving
from side to side, ie, moving the notes from one side to another,
displacing the time. But, I'm sure, if you're careful, it will be OK.

I´ve defaulted all tracks in my autoload to disable transpose.
