thanks for the tips....I just did a clean sweep of everything -- I'm  
not sure that will solve everything.  Now Safari is crashing, ical is  
crashing ---who knows?

It still doesn't make sense: when I used FW to connect to external HD,  
it was a big problem; now that I have it connected by USB, still  
things are crashing --- I just don't know where to go with this.

Any more ideas?

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
