I think it stands for Apple Audio Codec. I think that the MP3 licencers
wanted too much in royalties, so Apple designed their own answer to MP3 - much like
Apple and Microsoft did when Adobe controlled the Postscript font technology,
so they developed Truetype together as an answer.
