The only thing I would add to the correct info everyone has posted here is that thanks to the internet, 
it easier than ever to "publish your work" (ie; putting your song up on a myspace or other artist-promoting internet 
site, for selling or listening.)
This constitutes what Mr GAMoore suggests as having a witness to the work. In the old days, that could mean selling your song
on vinyl or having it played to the masses on the radio.
Now, we just post it up there, and blammo! The entire world can hear it in an instance.

Always put the copyright on your tack (you can do this in Waveburner and iTunes too, I believe.)
Or, at least have something on your website that says something like; 
"ALL CONTENT ON THIS PAGE ©2008 your-name-here"

That protects every song and your pictures & graphics too.
