[LUG] [OT] Best way to Copyright your work????

[LUG] [OT] Best way to Copyright your work????

2008-11-19 by Chaz

I am about to submit a song somewhere, and I want to protect it before I get a chance to actually copyright it. Also, I'm told it's better to copyright a group of songs, or an album, because its cheaper. So until I have enough songs to complete an album, I also want to protect each song I submit.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Chaz

I'm no expert, but I do teach a college songwriting class.

IMO, don't waste money on:

1. Library of Congress (better uses for your money)

2. Mailing it to yourself (won't hold up in court)

All you need for proof of creation is

© 2008 Your Name + plus a witness to verify it's your work

This is all that is needed for court, should the need arise.

Meantime, it's more about getting it to the right people. AND, should
it get picked up and recorded, consider going ahead and registering it
w/ ASCAP or BMI (for airplay) or CCLI for church needs.

Hope this helps.

I can only speak for the UK, but here you automatically get copyright on
your own work. All you have to do is to have proof that you wrote it earlier
than anyone who might claim copyright to your work, so if you stick a cd in
a tamper-proof envelope, send it to yourself registered or recorded
delivery, preferably with the date stamp across the seal, then you have
proof that you had the song written by that date. Nobody else will be able
to show that they had the song any earlier, and that is sufficient for
copyright in the UK.

Hope that helps

If you get Masterwriter software (for lyrics mainly), there is a subscription
to Songguard which is pretty cheap and allows you to register your songs in
early stages. You can also batch copyright songs. I think I paid $45 to
copyright 18 songs a few months ago. They have to all have the same authorship for
the set though. I am planning to update that same copyright pretty soon with
newer lyrics and some tweaks - as a revise not a resubmit.

The only thing I would add to the correct info everyone has posted here is that thanks to the internet,
it easier than ever to "publish your work" (ie; putting your song up on a myspace or other artist-promoting internet
site, for selling or listening.)
This constitutes what Mr GAMoore suggests as having a witness to the work. In the old days, that could mean selling your song
on vinyl or having it played to the masses on the radio.
Now, we just post it up there, and blammo! The entire world can hear it in an instance.

Always put the copyright on your tack (you can do this in Waveburner and iTunes too, I believe.)
Or, at least have something on your website that says something like;
"ALL CONTENT ON THIS PAGE ©2008 your-name-here"

That protects every song and your pictures & graphics too.

Good luck!

Charlie

actually it was someone else who suggested the witness protection program. i think you are both correct - in theory. the problem arises if it goes to court and there is a need to prove that a given song among many was created by such a date. if you work months on a song, it doesn't hurt to get it some real protection from the copyright office.
