I can only speak for the UK, but here you automatically get copyright on your own work. All you have to do is to have proof that you wrote it earlier than anyone who might claim copyright to your work, so if you stick a cd in a tamper-proof envelope, send it to yourself registered or recorded delivery, preferably with the date stamp across the seal, then you have proof that you had the song written by that date. Nobody else will be able to show that they had the song any earlier, and that is sufficient for copyright in the UK.
