I'm not using 9, but in earlier versions, the audio playback in the various audio bin and sample edit windows always played back on a specific track -- I think Audio 1. If you have that muted or routed interestingly, then it might not play back. I think you can also specify somewhere which track it uses, so you might want to dig around for that and make sure it's set to a track that's available and routed properly.
