Folks, thanks for your input. In order to hear audio when working in the sample editor, you must have a "Prelisten" audio object set up in the Environment. It _may_ have to be set to ch. 256, though I'm definitely not certain about that. In any event, that will allow you to monitor audio in that window.
I was clued into this by the "Prelisten" pop-label when I clicked the Prelisten button. Didn't even know it was called Prelisten. Anyhow, creating that object solved the problem. Thanks much for your quick replies -- they got me thinking.

Not at home, so can't check if this is related, but you don't have a
hidden track solo-ed by any chance? If the solo/mute lights are dimmed but
blinking in the mixer window, this sometimes causes audio to disappear. I
don't have a solution though, whenever it happens to me I end up trying
random things until I free it up.
That's probably a red herring though
