Its hard to start a new group. We have done really well having gotten 230 members in 6 weeks, but I think we need a larger group of active members to get more substantive discussions. I think you'll see on all lists that there are ebbs and flows of good and bad discussions.
We also need to maintain a certain level of polite interaction with others. Buts its kind of a delima for me because I really wanted to make this list a non-moderated group and rely on everyone's maturity and common sense. I don't like the attitude on the main LUG, where certain "sweethearts" can post immediately and say anything they want, then others have their messages rejected for saying the same thing, or arbitrarily banned from the list. I have heard from a number of people unhappy with the LUG whom you don't hear about on the list because their messages never got through.
But even on the LUG, there was a message yesterday from one of the moderators complaining about all the nasty attacks and such when they didn't moderate it closely for the weekend. So this kind of thing happens on all lists. And I guess thats why they have their very strict rejection/banning policies.
When it comes to this list, I don't want to scold people or act like a dictator. But I get it on both ends. Some people complain and threaten to leave because of nonsense discussions, and other complain and threaten to leave when they are politely and privately told to tone it down. There is no way to please everyone.
I guesss a list is what a group makes it. I don't get any particular benefit from running this group. I'm not a beta tester, music teacher, or author of a logic book, and I don't have a Logic consulting business. There is no financial or reputation benefit to me. I do beleive that there need to be alternatives to the LUG and its small city size. Different strokes for different folks.
So I'll leave it up to you guys. If you want me to moderate the list, or ban some people fine, or we can leave it as it is and you put the messages in digest mode so you can just page down really fast. And if anyone is interested in being a moderator, let me know.
