Is that right? > Yes, should work fine. I'm using a ISA430 pre with the digital option straight into my G5 via the optical input. Pretty handy as you don't have to deal with drivers and all that. Latency is about the same as with any other card. I usually monitor everything through the G5, but sometimes I also plug the pre straight into the mixer to better control the volume for monitoring and zero latency. As for the DA, I recommended a friend of mine the Presonus Central Station. Lots of routing options, you can hook up a remote controller and the best thing is that it gets rid of the ground noise of the G5 as it is connected via optical wire.
