Yes, should work fine.

I am wondering if I get a G5 if I can ditch my audio board. I have an Apogee Rosetta external Analog-digital converter which I think I can send it in via the optical input, then the G5 has stereo outputs for monitoring. Is that right?
Yes, should work fine.

I have tried various forms of it. It works but there is a problem. Personally I find the latency that they system adds when you go that route unacceptable.

I believe the optical jack is only an output, so you'll need a sound card. But I just got rid of my digital mixer about three months ago - I'm using a MOTU PCI424 card with two 2408s and a 1224 for synths and digital outputs of Giga/Kontakt PCs, as well as the outputs of my Pro Tools rig - and it's working great. -- Nick Batzdorf 818/905-9101, cell 590-9101, fax 905-5434

There is both optical in and out as well as analog in and out and you can freely select which you want to use with the Audio Midi setup utility:

Latency is about the same as with any other card. I usually monitor everything through the G5, but sometimes I also plug the pre straight into the mixer to better control the volume for monitoring and zero latency. As for the DA, I recommended a friend of mine the Presonus Central Station. Lots of routing options, you can hook up a remote controller and the best thing is that it gets rid of the ground noise of the G5 as it is connected via optical wire. I want to buy one, but... not enough money yet :) Best regards, Juande www.cambiodeplanes.com

I am not too sold on Presonus's quality control though. When this thing first came there was no connected on the end of the power supply that connected the power supply to the unit (why oh why not just properly shield it and put the fucking thing inside the case anyway.....?). The are pretty easy to pop out if you touch them the wrong way. The when the faders were zeroed the knobs were pointing every which way when it came out of the box (no big deal to pull them off and put them on correctly but *why didn't they do that at the factory*?) What is worst is I have had a problem with an intermittent failure of the left side in the cue circuit and the thing is still only 2 months old. My one last complaint is that the headphone amps are wimpy and I simply cannot get enough juice out of them to use them for a loud session. I also borrowed a Presonus Digimax from a friend and it is kind of the same story. It sounds great and has a decent feature set but he had only used the unit about twice and already the input of the #1 channel was broken in such a way that the gain was always on about 1100 no matter what you did. So basically only 7 of it's channels worked. Like I say I think their products are OK but their quality control sucks big time.
