Monitoring latency is basically the time it takes for a signal to go into the analog to digital convertor receive whatever processing it is going to get and then get spat out the digital to analog convertor. It is not really a problem of having what has been recorded line up accurately it is a question of when you play your instrument into the mic does the sound that comes into your headphones have a delay that is distracting enough to detract from your performance.
