Latency and other stuff

2005-01-30 by Charlie Massey

I keep hearing about latency.

Question: Does this latency vary as the piece progresses? If it does then what I am going
to say next can be skipped over and go to the next paragraph.....

The latency problem has been around since the first sequencer I had-an Oby DSX. It was
not dealt with in the original software, as I recall, but new eproms came out with new
features and you replaced the first eprom with the new chip. So, if the bass patch was a
tad draggy, move it up, etc, etc. It was available in EditTrack, (when I moved to a
computer sequencer in the mid 80's) and was easy to lock in the groove. This is available
in Logic also to put the track "in the pocket". And like I say, if the time varies during the
tune, forget this paragraph! This "fix" is predicated on a clock/time that doesn't vary.

As to the OSX strip down: I just posted that letter I found because it seemed to me that
some of the problems were caused by a "confuser" that was overloaded so if you dump a
few things, (like an Eastern Siberian Husky font) you might gain enough "umph" to make
Logic work and not crash. So far, I haven't had the problem but I haven't gone much past
a simple SMF as I try to sort this beast out!

However, I believe I am going to stick with my outboard gear for a long time after seeing/
hearing all the problems. <g> I am too old to blaze any more trails!!
