I had the impression that OSX was the "bee's knees" because of the superior RAM
management c.f. OS9 assigned memory. And that is in issue with my Steinway B piano
sound that has ~1GB of memory. But that doesn't seem to be borne out so far.

I think part of it is true (that osX is superior), part is marketing and part is potential. I have run OS X on three different macs, and have problems on all three. It seems that the memory management is better, however, the pretty quartz graphics exact a heavy toll. I do run 9 once in a while, and I find it more responsive and snappier, but it gets busy and you can't do anything else. I think they should make a OS-X-with plane graphics for those who want maximum performance without the cool graphics, and buldging dock, animated openings, and photo quality.

I can understand that there may be some issues or setup to tune a good system - afterall a music computer system is a complicated system. On my music mac, I have never had any internet connection. I run terminal ('sudo periodic daily', 'sudo periodic weekly', etc), I run DiskUtil repair permissions, and I run Diskwarrior - which is the limit of my knowledge on how to keep the system running well - and indeed these things do fix problems many times - such as when OS X crashes and when I reboot and start logic and it says I don't have an audio driver.

If it were me running things at Apple, I would make all of these steps and whatever others very public so every user knows how to get a good and stable system. OSX has been out 4 years? And the same thing with Logic. They have left it up to us to discover that loading large samples can cause havoc with ram and cause suddeen crashes. They have futher left it up to us to guess whether its our fault for not doing something right, or a bug. Can you imagine if Photoshop crashed on all of the graphic pro's using it, and there was nothing said or done for months and months?

But I am hopeful you guys are right that something is going to come down the road soon. A little communication would be great to put our minds at ease. Imagine if your wife was like Apple, and no word, then suddenly "Here's our new baby!".

Speaking of secrecy, I heard that Apple is suing someone for posting news of new products on the internet. Anyone know what the secrets were?

If it were me, I'd find out why those things happen and update the OS so
that they aren't even needed. I've never had to repair permissions on a
Windows machine. (Any of the probably four or five WinXP machines I've had.
[That is checked in WinXP as part of the disk check facility.]) However, I
have had to on the one OSX machine I have several times. I personally think
it is a bug in the OS that it ever has to be done.

My two cents,

Kamm

LOL, well that too! They do have the "3 am automatic maintence" but maybe
you're right - they should have something that checks permissions automatically
after every install and flags the need to repair permissions or just repairs
them as part of any install. I have gleaned what I can from reading magazine
articles in Macworld and Photoshop user (which takes Mac maintence more
seriously than any music magazine I've seen) and from various elists. You have to be
a detective just to know how to keep your machine up and running.

Of course you can get G5 for a megabit G4 as a node. However, I saw an
article in Sound on Sound or Computer Music a few months ago about hooking up
multiple computers. I forgot the details. If I find it, I'll report what I can find.

Trust me, if money were no object I'd have two Dual CPU G5s! Unfortunately
I'm wanting to make use of the PCs that are already paid for. I've already
spent $1000 for Logic Pro and $400 for EWQLSO Gold and $200 for a US-122
and..., well you get the picture. <grin>

I anxiously await whatever you find out.

Hey Kamm, I don't sell Macs, so you don't need to explain. I think the article was in Sound on Sound (from last summer) and might have discussed mac/mac, pc/pc and mac/pc connections.

I went to SOS and did a search for mLan and there are about a dozen articles ... (I also searched for Multiple, Intranet, Connection, etc... but couldn't find it).

Maybe it was in Future Music - they all look alike to me. I think I may have seen a similar but shorter article in Recording or Electronic Musician since then too. I invision more and more cluster networks for top end music processing.

Actually its a very scary thing if you put all of your music purchases into a spreadsheet over a few years ... the amount of money spent can easily have been a downpayment on house or a new car... and the money made from the house going up in price far exceeds the income of all but top pros - but we love music so its worth it!
