I was surprised to learn that the G5's come with USB2 - so this opens the possibility of external drives and printers using USB2 which are plentiful and cheap (because of being cross compatible with windows).

As well as the Emac and the later G4 iBooks, yes.

As far as I know, you can connect these to USB1 ports as well. They'll just 
work at USB1 speed then.

So are USB1 printers and drives..

maybe I'm just missing the point here? :o)

Well, IEEE1394/firewire also works with windows, provided that you have the
appropriate hardware.

I believe that the reason for the price disparity between USB2 equipment
and firewire equipment has more to do with the comparably hefty patent
licensing fees associated with IEEE1394.

Keep in mind, though, that firewire generally gives better real world
performance than USB2.
