How about the UAD-1?
Here is my thinking on this ... Its good, but its much less flexible. If you pay $600 for the card, then $150 for the Fairchild, and $200 for the Limiter, and $150 for the plate reverb, and $150 for the Cambridge EQ - you're at $1100 - for some great sounding compressors, reverb and EQ. But for $1350 you can get the entry level G5 (educational price), and $1800 for the low end dual processor G5 (1.8) - and with those you can run the 60 or Logic plugs and Soft synths (I am assuming) as a node. And I am guessing I would use the G5 as a primary logic station until the time when horsepower becomes very scare - since its probably 3 times as powerful as my G4. The G5 would also be available to use for Photoshop and other things where the UAD would be useless.
(I just use the basic plugs on the UAD - mainly the 1176, LA2A compressors and the Pultec eq, and the reverb that comes with it. I find a lot of the other plugs on the UAD not that useful or not that convenient since there is no tempo sync on things like delays and phasers, nor graphic displays on EQ on the channel strip. The disortion is way over the top and not useful for me. )
By the way, I was reading that the LA2a is a frequency dependent compressor but there is no frequency control nor any frequency meter so its a complete mystery how that works. Does any one know?
