Adding a bar

Adding a bar

2005-09-02 by tim_trax

Is there a way to add a bar at the beginning of a Logic song and at
the same time move
the automation and tempo changes. I can't get my Virtual guitarist
to play on the first
note, but I'm sure if I added a bar and game him more time to 'think'
he would be a good
boy. But I don't want to have to re-do my automation and tempo
changes. I realize this is
a VG problem but I have often come upon this situation - where I add
time and Logic
moves the note data but not the tempo changes.

I have that problem with instruments every now and then.. Ive made it a
habit to just start my songs at either bar 1 or 2 (we usually need a
count in from the drum machine anyways so it all works out hehe)..

Ok going off the top of my head, Im at work here and dont have access to
Logic so bear with me, grab the first measure or however many you need,
and set your locater points to this measure(s).. On one of the menus in
the arrange window (this is where being at home wouldve been really
handy), there is a command to Insert Time based on the locater points
you have set.. I want to say its on the Track menu but I dont think so.
Now if everything works as it should, you should now have an extra
bar(s) inserted where you set the locate points, and Logic should give
you that message about tracks containing Automation Data and ask you
whether you want to move/copy/keep/etc..

You can move the beginning of the song by grabbing the start marker in the scale bar at top and dragging from bar 1 to 0 or -1, ... etc. However, I usually just select all (command A), then move everything to start about bar 10 - to leave some space for intros and expansion to the left.

Regarding automation, I think it will ask you if you want to move it or not. I think there is a preference for that too.

Lately I have decided to just get a good decent mix, then use automation only at the final stages.

Oh yeah see what happens at work.. I missed the obvious haha.. Just
select All, then move it, Logic will then definately ask you if you want
to move the Automation data with it..
Hopefully youre on Logic 7, cause under Logic 6 Pro, there were always
problems moving Automation like this and it never worked 100%.. In fact
most of the time my automation never moved and had to be done manually..
Was so relieved when this was fixed in 7..

Thats how logic always is - several ways. Actually I never use the Insert or Cut time commands. If you have a long note that stretches over a bar line, and you insert time does it length it or put an empty space there? And what about frozen tracks or locked tracks? I just end up doing things manually.

Good question hehe.. I do believe when you hit in the middle of a
lengthy note you should get the 'Keep, Shorten, Split' still that you
get when you normally cut a region in half.. But thats Midi, like you
said I wouldnt go doing it in the middle of an audio track hehe..

Thanks Chris.
I should have stated I'm running Express 6. I don't see that 'add time' function in any of
the arrange menu drop downs. I wouldn't be surprised if it was absent in ths version.

its a key command not a menu item as far as I know. there are hundreds of commands which are key command only.

Well I dont know about Express, but no its not a key command only function.

In Logic 6 it was in clear view on one of the Arrange Menus as Insert Time By Locators.
Now in Logic 7 Pro you need to go to Region->Cut/Insert Time->Insert Time and move by locators.

Actually what I really want to know is, Can you add a bar anywhere - say bar 43, without
messing up the automation and tempo changes - Or for that matter subtract a bar. That
would be handy too at times.

well there you go - I'm finding more and more bad things about my Express 6. I guess it's
time to gulp and move up.

There are no automation preferences in my Logic 6 Express that I can find. And I've never
been asked if I also want to move the automation. (that I remember!)

Put some track automation on a region. Then move the region a few bars and it should ask you if you want to move the automation (I think its gives you the option to always move automation, or never or ask) and this is changeable in the prefs too. If it doesn't ask please report back what it does. Put some distinct hills and valleys in the automation so you can see if it moves or not.

Actually what I really want to know is, Can you add a bar anywhere - say bar 43, without

You need to do a little experiment to determine the answer to that. It would probably work if you cut the region into two, then move one (where automation moves with it).

This is why I said I don't mess with automation at all untill the song is finished. If I am going to change the arrangement and move things around and add bars, then it becomes much more complicated with automation.

The other thing you can do is to output the tracks to new audio files (which I THINK will record the automation to the new files). Then you don't have to mess with automation - but its not editable of course.
