Logic express 7, reason and midi problems

2004-12-30 by slappie99@hotmail.com

I'm only a beginner to all of this having been happy with sonar and reason before i've had
to move up (as it were) as my pc can't handle the load anymore.
So, my problem is probably straight forward but i can't figure it out. I've got an M-audio
keystation 49e keyboard connected to a 17" G4 powerbook via USB. When i open logic on
its own it picks up i'm playing something and will record the notes in the midi tracks but
won't play anything back. It's almost the same with reason but i understand that i'd have
to sort it out in the environment *cringe*.
That's probably where the problem is.
Tried looking at the environment, had a go. still nothing.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks

I'm not sure I understand your problem exactly. In Logic, you select a midi track on the arrange page, and have your keyboard set to MIDI, and then what you play will go through logic - you can record it as midi, and you can see midi information in the transport (and if you had a midi interface like AMT8 you would see the lights blinking). If you record the midi, you should see an object on that track in the arrange page of logic and if you double click on it, it should open the matrix or score window to see what you played.

It sounds to me like you might have your keyboard set to playing sounds, but not transmitting midi. Or else there is no midi track set up for that instrument. You don't have to do a lot in the envirnoment, just create a new midi multi-instrument, give it a name, and click on the individual tracks (to get rid of the diagonal line through them, to activate them). You might need to consider what port to put that on.

You can also test your system, but drawing some notes in the matrix editor and the making it play only from Logic to see if the midi notes go to your keyboard.

Maybe you need to explain some more.

well there's not really much else to explain. My keyboard doesn't transmit sounds, just
midi information. It should be working properly (i've looked in the manuals and have sat
here till my head's almost burst) as even entering notes physically into a midi track matrix
screen presents no audio result. There's nothing wrong with the core audio settings (i
think).
On the reason note, i some how managed to get logic to read and playback the sounds
rewired from reason whilst an audio track is armed and setup to be rewired through
reason, but after recording a few bars it played back nothing.

The only other thing i can think to add is that you need to set up an
instrument in the arrange window for the track you're recording to.
you can record to a track and create a sequence, but you need to
assign an instrument to actually play back the recorded material.
