LiquidMix demo audio

LiquidMix demo audio

2006-12-20 by GAmoore@aol.com

You can hear the effect of Focusrite's LiquidMix in these small itunes files.
I made a sample song in GarageBand using the stock components - one without
the liquidmix ("BEFORE"), and one with liquidmix on all four tracks ("AFTER").
You can hear quite a difference. (You might need to login with a yahoo id, ...
In the files section of the Logic_Cafe yahoo group, under Files > Liquidmix
demo)

You can indeed hear quite a difference but the AFTER file has quite a
bit of distortion. Also, the mix is quite different between the two
that it's difficult to make any judgement on whether or not the
LiquidMix helped it or not. I am assuming that the BEFORE mix had no
fx plugins applied and the AFTER one did, correct? Personally, it
doesn't sway me one way or the other. I don't know which is the best
way to compare plugs such as these to others but I have found in the
past that it is best when I can either sit down with a demo or try it
out in the store (if a demo is not available). Thanks for doing this
though.

The thing that makes it hard to try out, is that its a hardware/software
combination so you can't download a demo version. And I never see this stuff set
up to be played with in Guitar Center or Sam Ash. But Guitar Center has a 30
day return policy.

One slightly misleading thing is that the levels are hotter with the
liquidmix stuff on. I basically put one eq and one compressor on each of the four
channels (drums, bass, guitar, and string pad). The AFTER shouldn't be that
distorted though. Everything sounds more ballsy, present, warmer and fuller to me
with the liquid mix.

One big problem for me, is that there are so many high end compressors and
eq's and I don't know which one to use in which situation.

My local dealer has a decent return policy also but I hear you on the
situation of things being set up. Many times it is the same here too.
However, my dealer has a LiquidMix *and* a SSL Duende set up that I'm
hoping to try one of these days when I have a few hours to burn.

Maybe I'm just sensitive to distortion but I found the AFTER file quite
distorted when I listened to it. I found it hard to make a good
comparison because the levels were hotter also. Human nature is to
prefer the louder one typically.

A nice situation to be in though. :-)

Thanks again for doing this.
