Apogee Ensemble Review .... Anybody Test Drive One Yet?

Apogee Ensemble Review .... Anybody Test Drive One Yet?

2006-12-24 by pete_buchwald

Hey Gang,

I'm considering purchasing an apogee ensemble.

 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Ensemble/

Anybody try one of these yet? Apogee is known for it's awesome A/D conversion and I
primarily want in on that action, and to up my track input options to 8.

The way it is designed to work hand-in-glove with Logic Pro also makes the Ensemble a
tempting prospect.

     Thanks!!!

Its been out for a year. I saw it demo'ed at NAMM last year. You might want
to wait a month and see if they introduce anything better.

I have had good experiences with Apogee (and Line6). I bought a used Rosetta
and then contacted them, and they mailed an upgraded chip ... for free! I
still use that Rosetta direct into the MacG5 digital input.

It certainly is a tempting prospect. The stuff I have read on it
though has not been that great. Not necessarily on the sound quality
(I'm sure it sounds great) but mostly on the drivers. The Ensemble
uses Apple's built-in firewire drivers. Apparently latency can change
between O/S upgrades and they aren't all that stable from what I have
read. I have read favourable reviews on Apogee's Symphony card but
that requires additional A/D and D/A interfaces which means it is very
expensive compared to the Ensemble.

Take this with a grain of salt though as this is what I've read from
people using the unit and not from actual firsthand experience.
