Latency: Instances and Solutions?

Latency: Instances and Solutions?

2007-04-20 by pete_buchwald

Group,

I've noticed, listenning back to projects I recorded days and months ago that latency is
everywhere.

The other day it was obvious that Space Designer was the culprit.

My question to the group is: When do you notice latency in playback/mixing? And then
what good fixes have you used for that situation?

Is latency constant with the plugin? Or will it change with the volume of the "signal"
coming through the plugin??

I'm tempted to print the track with effects.

    Thanks,

       Pete

Just wondering if you have enabled latency compensation in Space
designer (small button left and center). I'm not sure about this but
it seems to be separate from plugin compensation. I have also found
that when using SD I need to turn "direct" completely off in SD to
prevent phase issues and send my tracks via a buss to it. Hope this
helps. I have latency issues often and find it can be difficult to
deal with. I will be interested to know if this is the culprit.

Generally, if i'm still playing parts into the song, i turn off all plug-ins that cause latency,
which are mainly my UAD-1 plugins, and Logics limiters. If i'm done playing parts,
i go to -

Preferences/Audio/Genreral and on 'Plug-in delay compensation' choose All. Then you can
use any plug-in you want and everything stays in sync.

but I have to hit that so often that now i think of it as a 'toggle' switch since i'm constantly
going back and re-playing parts. In fact, they should put that item somewhere in the
arrange page! that'd be a huge improvement.

Thats not a bad idea. I found that unless we can get to near zero
latency the only way I can record overdubs is not to monitor through
logic. I use my trusty old outboard mixer and split all signals
before the converters so I can monitor in real time and leave plugin
delay on. Someday maybe I can get apogee symphony cards and do
without it but not today Im afraid. This also allows me to sing
through my trusty outboard reverbs etc. I also have UAD plugs, they
are great.
