Why buy new?

Why buy new?

2007-09-13 by Gregory

If Logic Studio doesn't use the dongle, doesn't that mean I can buy
the upgrade and keep using Logic Pro independently with the XSKey?
What do I gain by buying at new copy at $499 vs. upgrading at $199?

Maybe you can do the upgrade for $199, then sell your dongle and Logic
7.2 to someone else for $299 - with the warning that they probably
won't be able to upgrade it, and make $100. Kinda like doing your own
academic deal for anyone.

Its been stated you need the dongle to perform an upgrade.
And you will also need it everytime you reinstall the software.

I'm sure you're right, but where is it stated? It looks to me like
Apple want users to buy new rather than upgrade. Point of interest (I
think) new Express is cheaper than Express 7 upgrade. Also as a Final
Cut and Logic user I'm not over the moon about paying for Sound Track
Pro twice; once now for each product. On the up side this hopefully
means better integration between the two product sets.

Keep the views rolling in.

Check out the installation manual for upgrading to Logic Studio.
Page 7 explicitly states the following:

11 A dialog appears, asking you to either enter the serial number
of your earlier Logic
version, or to connect your XSKey to one of your computers USB ports.

- If you are upgrading a previous Logic Pro version, Logic Express 6,
or Logic Audio,
connect your XSKey to one of your computers USB ports.

Important:
Do not throw away your XSKey after installationyoull need it
whenever upgrading to Logic Pro 8 (or reinstalling it, if necessary).

You can find the manual at the following location:

However, Apple had on their webpage that the dongle is no longer necessary,
and they have changed to a code number system. By the way, I am planning on
updating and keeping 7.2 - I was just making that suggestion rhetorically.

Apple support told me over the phone that the 2 versions will run on the same system. Files
saved in 8 won't open in v. 7x, however.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
