V-Drums with Logic

V-Drums with Logic

2007-10-09 by Norton, Mike - BUP

Hi,

I'm new to the group and to Logic Pro and have a few questions that I hope
someone can answer.

I'll start by declaring that I'm a reformed Cubase user of many years and
have moved to Logic in the past few weeks. Frankly, it's been like a breath
of fresh air but I'm slowly getting to grips with the Logic way of working.
Going from Cubase on a PC to Logic on a Mac has been an interesting and
challenging transition.

That said, working within Logic with virtual instruments has been a breeze.

My question is about external instruments, which I've found harder to set
up.

I have a Roland V-Drum kit which I route (midi and audio) through a Presonus
Firebox.

I have created a VDrum module in the Audio/Midi set-up in the Apple
utilities folder. This is really just a standard GM instrument.

Launching Logic, I notice there are two ways to open this instrument. The
first is to create an external instrument track. I do this, select the VDrum
module, choose channel 10, and I can record and playback the V-Drum kit.
However, the sound does not route to the output of the PreSonus and cannot
be bounced down to an audio track. There seems no way to route the output of
this track.

The other way seems to be to create a midi track and choose external
instrument from the list of instruments. I can select the VDrum module as
before, choosing channel 10 again, and this time it does route to the output
of the PreSonus and can be bounced. BUT - I have to disable the mixer on the
Presonus for it to work.

Anyway, I feel I am stumbling around here and not doing this right. So here
are my questions:

1) Is anyone using V-Drums with Logic that could give me a basic
set-up guide (both in Logic and the audio/midi set-up)?

2) Is there anyone using a Presonus Firebox/Firepod with external
instruments that could give me a guide to setting up Logic/the Firebox for
use with external instruments.

I hope these are not stupid questions with obvious, time-wasting answers. I
really have spent hours trying to figure this out.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

2 approaches:

1) If you want to use the sounds from the VDrum brain.
You need to take 2 leads line out of the V drums into your presonus
( or more if you have multi outputs and want to be able to mix later)
and record onto two or more audio tracks in logic. The fact that it
is recorded as MIDI already is kind of immaterial. Either do this
right at the end for bouncing down or do it earlier on so you can
treat the aduio with effects.

2) Another way is to drag the MIDI part you recorded from channel 10
and put it onto a virtual instrument drum track. Suddenly what you
played on the VDrums has access to all the drum sounds or any other
sound in Logic's virtual instruments. You can edit it as midi but it
will bounce down as audio when you bounce the track. I think the drum
sounds in Logic are better than in the roland and once it is fixed as
audio you can't change it so easily.

cheers

I use the firepod w/logic. A great free audio routing helper is soundflower.
I'm not sure if this will help this issue but it might help in other areas -
even outside of Logic.

Hypothetically speaking ....

You could sample the V-Drum kits into the EXS24. It would hypothetically take you about
an hour. Then a person could sell their V-Drum brain on eBay.

     I'm not saying that I did this, and I'm not saying I didn't. : )

The brush kit, hypothetically of course, would be the more challanging sample to work
with, since it's less transient. The samples would be less convincing, and therefore sample
with that in mind.

Interesting to hear about your transition from Cubase to Logic!

     Sincerely,

       Pete
