Converters

Converters

2009-01-03 by mark seagraves

Not all converters are the same! There IS a reason Apogee remains very popular at its price point. It's the same reason RME and others like UA, and SSL offer high-end converters. High-end audio converters are expensive to manufacture. Its a lot more than just marketing hype. I have an RME PCIe card in an XP-PC running Nuendo and I'm very happy with that. Upgrading last year, I was going to go the high-end RME route but couldn't really find a state side rep who knew a lot about the gear. It was impossible for me to get demo units into my studio before buying on special order from my main rep so...That narrowed the field down to two.

After listening to Apogee 8 and 16 channel offers against a Lynx Aurora 8 I went with the Aurora. I have been more than pleased. It sounds incredible on a lot of different types of material. The Lynx AES-PCIe card has been flawless since I installed it. I have the Aurora 8 on the first 4 AES and 4 AES from an Eventide H8000 on the other. The H8ks converters are incredible too. So I have 12 very high end inputs - 4 with realtime DSP to disk. That's 12 pristine inputs and an Eventide for about the same price as 16 channels of Apogee. I would recommend this set-up to anyone interested in upgrading converters.
