Virtual Instruments / Software Instruments

2009-01-18 by showtunesbroadway

Hi guys....hoping you can help!

I'm fairly new to Logic (and audio technology generally!) - but I'm geting to grips with
creating songs using the software instruments. But I'm now at the stage where I want to
expand my library.......can anyone give me some recommendations. I'm using mostly
orchestral sounds - but can't afford the HUGE libraries (like Vienna etc etc).

Where should I begin!!!

I think some of the best values of samples where the M-audio collections of
strings, brass, etc. They were made by Sonivox and listed for about $100 each -
but they were cut down versions of Sonivox's $1000 sets. A good all around
value for Orchestral is also Garritan Personal Orchestra for $199.

Garritan is a great choice for general orchestral sounds - it's based
on NI's Kontakt Player 2 and has built in convolution reverb that
helps set the instruments in a common space. Very useful. It's also
quite playable.

The Silver version of East/West's Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestras is
also a nice lower-end package, although slightly more expensive.

Garritan announced a new version of GPO coming out soon. I personally like
Sonivox soundwise better than GPO for strings at least. Piano is another story.

Two that come to mind- Symphobia by Project Sam and MSI by MOTU:

Also Garritan Personal Orchestra is stunning:

I have a cut down version of the Vienna library, but on a recent project I wound up using
quite a few sounds out of the Logic collection - they are really not too bad. So, have a look
at what you already have before committing to commercial sample libraries.
