Edit Apple audio loop?

Edit Apple audio loop?

2010-03-15 by stratjackson

I'm brand new to Logic and I'm hitting my first "wall." I want to edit an audio drumset loop - not the file attributes per se, but the actual pattern being played - so that the loop better fits the song I'm working on.
Is this possible? If so, how do I do this? Can an audio loop be converted to a midi file so that I can edit it like I would a midi drumset loop (which I DID figure out how to do)?

No audio can not easily be returned to Midi. Logic does have an
audio-to-score function but I used it again recently and found it
completely worthless. Even if it did work, i would give you a bunch of
midi notes, and you would not have the original sounds that made the
loop so you would not be able to edit it.

You do these things though :
- use FLEX to or simply cut the loop into 16th notes using the
scissors, and then re-arrange or copy the parts as you see fit. These
will then adjust to different tempos too.
- you can use Recycle to make midi and little samples, and then you can
put that in EXS24.
- you can choose a midi loop instead of an audio loop, then have all
the editability you want.

Protools File in Logic / OMF

2010-03-15 by GAmoore@aol.com

Does anyone know how to open a Protools file in Logic? I have some
protools files someone gave me but they dont seem to open at all. Is
there some way to convert to OMF files?

I thoughtLogic just read them and inserted them.. have you tried..
I recall using them once and they just opened and the tracks got propagated within Logic.

Just a thought..
I had a feeling that Melodyne with DNA now had the ability to take polyphonic audio and export as some form of Midi but I have no idea as I don't have my copy yet but I recall reading about that somewhere.

Also There is a product out there called Audioscore Ultimate that can read polyphonic music and convert it into notation (which means into midi.)
http://www.neuratron.com/audioscore.htm

I have an LE version that comes with Sibelius and only handles Monphonic and it works surprisingly well.. Again I have not upgraed to the Un ltimate version for the Polyphony but have been tempted a few times.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to see if I can make some of these work. The reason I was hoping to edit the audio file was to be able to retain the more human/natural feel captured there.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hello all,
If you are able to save the track as an OMF in Pro Tools it should
import into Logic smoothly. AFAIK Logic has never been able to open
Pro Tools native files (PTF files)

Ex[port the Protools as OMF and then import the OMF..

Only issue is OMF files don't have such things as plugins info (because plugins would/could be different for both DAWs you would need to recreate that in logic.
Also I think OMF doesn't recall the tempo or recal it correctly so that would also need writing down and resetting in Logic.

Thanks. I don't have protools though. Thats the problem. I am trying to
figure out a way to make this conversion. I don't want to buy the
entire program just for this one time thing.

Yeah Melodyne works on drum loops too. You have to buy the plugin or
standalone though. And it might be a little funky if there are cymbol
hits which overlap drum hits. You can move beats around, and change
their pitch and envelope. However, for free, you can do that in Logic
just cutting the audio like I mentioned. In fact you can do all of that
in Logic if you want to spent the time to pitch shift, and such.

Logic 9 also has an audio to midi beat tool but I have never used it.

Re: Protools File in Logic / OMF

Don't think there's a way to open PT files (non OMF exported) unless there's some 3rd party prog that does conversion outside the DAW. What I used to have to do prior to getting a cheap Mbox and LE was find someone with a Pro Tools set up then export everything as audio files (including processed files via PT plugs if desired) and just dropping them in a Logic session. If you consolidate in PT you should have a zero point in Logic. If it's something you have to do a lot of I'd suggest Mbox Micro. Annoying to have to buy proprietary hardware to use a DAW but that's Digidesign. And having just re-read your post that's all quite useless suggestion, sorry. Never had much fun with OMF in Logic, I'd recommend bouncing, as above, if you can find a PT mate.

Just one point to keep in mind if you're not familiar with Digi's product line. The mBox Micro is a sweet little dongle that 's great for traveling. But it's playback only. There is no provision for recording. So if you happen to be mucking with a Pro Tools session for some reason and need to record anything other than VI's, you're out of luck. The mBox2 Mini is like $50 more, street price (last time I checked) and allows recording through either mic (48v available) or line inputs. I bought one on eBay for about $160US. I do understand that you may never want to record in PT, just open sessions for bounce and conversion. If this is always going to be the case, then the Micro will do you OK.

Best,
Bobbo
