Trick in Logic Pro for Analog Tape Compression and Warmth

Trick in Logic Pro for Analog Tape Compression and Warmth

2011-01-13 by Brian

I found this little trick from one of the videos, which I logged on to and watched at Logic Studio Training. If you use the tape delay plug in, if you set the frequency response from 20 to 20k, turn the dry mix down to zero and the wet mix up to full, as long as you turn the smooth parameter down to zero, set the feedback to zero, and keep the depth and rate of the modulation at zero, as well keep the flutter and flutter intensity at zero, you can mimic the sound of analog tape compression and warmth pretty good. There is an arrow head, which is at the very bottom of the plug in below the freeze button. If you click the arrow, it will even allow you to tweak the distortion level.

FYI -

In my audio production class we did a side by side (by side) comparison of:

   1. A two inch tape machine
   2. Tape emulator modules on a Neve console
   3. Digidesign "Reel Tape" suite.

We put some drums through each of the three. The consensus of the class was that they all did about the same thing, and that the Reel Tape suite was probably the most desirable way to get there because of it's price, flexibility.

With Pro Tools you can "rent" reel tape suite for $4 a day or something like that.

I tried the Logic tape delay plug before, but wasn't happy with it. I will try the settings you indicate and see if it works better.

ALSO! Google "Massey tapehead," it's a free tape emulator for Audio Units hosts!

     Pete

Ben, Thanks. I saw your post and looked it up. Apparently, it's a free one the guy wrote for Logic, bit I haven't tried it yet. Here is the link for everybody:

Hey, thanks! I didn't know about that one. I only knew about the ones at www.masseyplugins.com.

Kind regards,

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
